Brief History of Department:
The International School of Information Management (ISiM) is an innovative institute of the University of Mysore - charting a new course and pioneering the Information School(I-School) movement seeded with a munificent grant $400,000 from the Ford Foundation and Rs.5,000,000 funding from Bangalore based Informatics India Ltd. ISiM has been established in collaboration with leading I-Schools in the US such as the University of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University and University of Michigan in the US, and Dalhousie University in Canada, the International Institute of Information Technology (IIITB) - Bangalore. ISiM was launched on September 15, 2005 by signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Mysore and other founding members – School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, IIITB, and Informatics India at a gala evening programme of InfoVision 2005: the academia-industry Summit (www.infovision.org.in) by Dr. Som Mittal, then Director at HP and now president NASSCOM. ISiM was registered as a society on January 30, 2006. The M.Tech course started from the academic year 2007-08 and the PGDIM course started from the academic year 2009-10. Why this focus on ‘I’? Today information is not only a prized commodity; it poses tough challenges to manage. The information revolution brought in by the Internet has not only heralded the third phase of IT revolution but set in a new paradigm. WikiGyan is an in-house project that aims at coalescing the different localized survey and research efforts to make a global impact. The project engages the students to build and maintain the system and industry veterans to provide to mentor and monitor the progress. The model is one that is both self sustaining and also has a high scalability. The project is being piloted and built using the open system tools and technologies such as MediaWiki, and Pentaho BI tools and others by its students and industry stalwarts from Yahoo and Google volunteering to monitor and mentor the students, and is being tested currently.
