Brief History of Department
The Department was established in 1992 by introducing M.Sc. Microbiology programme and it had been functioning as a separate section in the Department of Studies in Botany till 2008. On 23rd July, 2008 a separate Department of Studies in Microbiology started functioning and now it is housed in the Life Science building. Department has a faculty strength of one professor, two associate professors and two assistant professors. Department is offering M.Sc. programme in Microbiology, PG Diploma in Food Quality and Safety and Ph.D programme. The PG Diploma programme is introduced in this academic year under the aegis of UGC-Innovative Programme. Department has been receiving financial assistance under DST-FIST programme to strengthen post graduate teaching and research. A well equipped research lab, computer lab with internet facility has been established under DST-FIST programme. Teaching faculty is accomplished with individual projects from various funding agencies like UGC, DST, ICMR, DIBER,etc.
Our mission is to impart skill based scientific and technical knowledge to students, with a vision to produce trained microbiologists. Research and development activities in the department are focused to fulfill the needs of various fields such as agriculture, industry, healthcare system etc. As a part of our social mission, we are offering free consultancy services to the farming community, plantation growers, in identifying the causal organism and suggesting the control measures to manage the plant diseases. Departmental culture collection provides cultures to other institutions for academic purposes. Department has been organizing invited lectures and awareness programmes regarding waste management and environment in collaboration with Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), Mysore chapter.
