Brief History of Department

    Department of Studies in Sociology is one of the oldest Sociology departments in the country. An independent Department of Sociology was established in the year 1949. Prior to this, the sociology course was offered in the department of social philosophy at Maharaja’s college. Brajendranath seal the second Vice-chancellor of University of Mysore and A.R. Wadia were instrumental in introducing Sociology in the curriculum of Social Philosophy at the university. The regular two years master’s degree program in sociology was started in 1955 at Manasagangotri campus. Prof. C. Parvathamma, the eminent professor laid a strong foundation in the formative stage of sociology at the University of Mysore and she remained as Head of the department till 1987. Department has parented two departments one is Department of Anthropology in 1974 and Department of Social Work in 1999.

    Prof. Wadia, Prof. Yamunacharya, Prof. Purushotham, Prof. Muddulinganna, Prof. C. Parvathamma, Prof. K.N. Venkatarayappa, Prof. H.M. Sadashivaiah and Prof. K.N. Somaiah were the pioneers of the department

    Prof. R. Indira (Ex-President of Indian Sociological Society) Prof. Satyanarayan, Prof. Jogan Shankar, (Ex Vice-Chancellor of  Kuvempu University) Prof. R.N. Hadimani, Prof. B.S. Paresh Kumar, B. Gururaj, and Prof. S. Yashoda are also contributed for the growth of the department through actively involved in teaching and research activities.

Faculty research Projects :
 Department of Sociology has made remarkable achievements in field of minor and major research project that had been taken up by the facilities of the department so far Twenty three research projects sponsored through various funding agencies have been completed successfully.

  • Networks established with voluntary groups for student placement
  • Collaborative research projects with National and International organizations
  • Department has student forum called “Vichara vedike” under which special lectures on current issues, and Co-curricular activities are organized for overall department of the students.
