The new department of Organic chemistry has been established on 10th of July 2015 by our Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Prof.K.S.Rangappa. Because of his continues interest and persuation, the new department is formed.
Before starting the department of Studies in Organic Chemistry, M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry course was started during April 2007 with Prof. K.M.Lokanath Rai as the course coordinator and it was running under the umbrella of department of studies in Chemistry. Prof. K.M.Lokanath Rai handled the course efficiently up to January 2015 and then Prof.Y.B.Basavaraju took the charge as the course coordinator from January 2015 to June 2015.
The full fledged department of Studies in Organic chemistry was started in July 2015 under the Chairmanship of Prof. S.Shashikanth, department of Studies in Chemistry, Manasagangothri, Mysore.
The department is an offshoot of Chemistry department which had been established even before the University was incorporated in 1916. The Department of Chemistry was started along with Dr. C. Suryanarayana as the Head of the Department, who served for a brief period. A year later, under the able leadership f Prof. G. Narayan the department was befittingly shifted to the kitchen of Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, (now a museum and a part of this university), after the induction of Dr. H. Sanke gowda, Dr. K.S. Siddalingaiah and Dr. T.R. Ramaiah as permanent faculty members of the department, specialized in Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry respectively. Four years later the post-graduate department of Chemistry was shifted to the new building on 28.03.1964, which was inaugurated by Padmabhushana Prof. M.S. Thacker, D.Sc., D.Litt.
Since 1964 Chemistry department involved with different sections like organic chemistry , Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Analytical chemistry and biochemistry. The Biochemistry section became a separate department during the year 1981. Earlier the department of Chemistry had execellent professors like Prof.D.S.Mahadevappa, Prof.H.S.Nagarajaiah, Prof.H.M.K.Naidu, Prof.N.M.MadeGowda, Prof.D.Channe Gowda(USA), Prof. K.S. Siddalingaiah, Prof.Y.V.Anjaneyalu, Prof.C.Anjanamurthy, Prof.S.Y.Ambekar, Prof. Mohan, Prof.Anandamurthy, Prof.K.Basavaiah, Prof. D.ChanneGowda, Prof.S. Akeel Ahamed and late Prof. P.Nagaraja. Presently Prof. H.S.Yathirajan, Prof.G.Nagendrappa, Prof. Lokanath Rai K.M, Prof.S.Ananda(Chairman of Dept. Of Studies in Chemistry), Prof. Y. B. Basavaraju, Prof. S.Shashikanth, Prof. Nagaraja Naik, Prof.H. D. Revanasiddappa, Dr. K.N.Mohan, Dr.M.P.Sadashiva and Dr.B. S. Priya are presently working in the Department of Studies in Chemistry.
