The Department of Studies in Sericulture Science was established under World Bank Assistance and independent status was accorded on 20th February 1995. It is located in the campus ‘Manasagangotri – Eternal Flow of Mind’ as coined by the poet ‘Rashtrakavi Kuvempu’. This department has started with a modest begin offering Post M.Sc. Diploma in Sericulture in the year 1982-1983, subsequently M.Sc. course in Sericulture has been offered in 1988-1989. To keep pace with the advances in Science and Technology, in the year 2008-2009, the nomenclature of the M.Sc. Sericulture course has been changed to Sericulture and Seribiotechnology by restructuring the curriculum with the inclusion of advanced technologies in sericulture, computer science, and frontier areas of science – genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics and emphasis has also been given to revise the syllabus at convenient intervals.
During the past three decades, the department has registered study progress both in teaching and research. Recently, the department has been recognized under DST-FIST DBT-BIRAC, DST – INSPIRE and DBT Skill Vigyan State partnership programs.
The department has mulberry garden in an area of 3.0 acres and 65 accessions of silkworm strains/breeds in the germplasm. Department has state-of-the art classroom with ICT, computer lab with high speed internet supported with UPS-back-up and central instrumentation facilities. The department has been in receipt of funds from various funding agencies such as World Bank, Central Silk Board, CSIR, UGC, DST, DBT, BIRAC and Government of Karnataka.
The department comprises 05 faculty members, three well trained technical and 15 non-teaching personnel. A few faculty members have been awarded prestigious Commonwealth and INSA fellowships tenable at premier institutions abroad. With these expertise and infrastructure, the department deciphers sound knowledge and imparts practical skill among students by giving hands on training in mulberry cultivation and large scale silkworm rearing. In addition, emphasis has also been given to revise the syllabus at convenient intervals considering advanced technologies in sericulture and frontier areas of science and technology including computer sciences and bioinformatics.
The research in the department has been focused on 05 major thrust areas - mulberry cytogenetics and breeding, mulberry and silkworm pest management, silkworm breeding and genetics, Biochemical genetics of silkworm, silkworm physiology and biochemistry. In recent years, frontier areas of research in Proteomics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Silk-biomaterials and Ericulture is in progress and contributed substantially to the field.

VISION
To impart skill based knowledge in Sericulture and Seribiotechnolgy to the students / stake holders and innovate advanced technology by search for promotion of sericulture industry that elevate rural economy.
MISSION
To train the post graduate students both in basic and recent technologies in Sericulture and Seri-biotechnology.
To emerge as resource personel to decipher and for transfer of technologies to the field / seri-farmers.
To acts as center of consultancy to address the local issues in relation to sericulture farming.
To conduct research for development of technology, materials and products for various applications.
To impart adequate skill and confidence among students to emerge as potential entrepreneurs.
