Brief History of Department:

 The Professional Social Work Programme leading to the award of Master’s Degree, was started in 1967 at the School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, Mangalore affiliated to the University of Mysore. In the academic year, 1977-78 a two-year PG course in Social Work (MSW) was started in the PG Department of Sociology with two temporary faculty, under the Chairpersonship of Late Prof. C. Parvathamma. With the establishment of Mangalore University in 1984, the School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, Mangalore came to be affiliated with the Mangalore University. 

To strengthen the research and training activities in the field of Social Work the University of Mysore established an independent Department of Studies in Social Work in January 1990, bifurcating the Social Work Course from the PG Department of Sociology.

For the first two years after the establishment of the MSW course in the Department of Sociology, the University offered the course under semester pattern. In 1979, the annual system was adopted. The semester scheme was reintroduced from the academic year 2001-02. From 2010 onwards, the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) pattern of curriculum has been adopted.

Departmental Research activities

The faculty members are actively involved in guiding students leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Social Work. The Department undertakes research projects sponsored by the UNICEF, UGC, Central Government, State Government, industries, NGOs, etc.,

Currently, the Department has undertaken two projects namely: - Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) and Smart Village Project sponsored by the Government of India and Government of Karnataka respectively.

 

 Best Practices Carried out by the department

1. The Department strives to make our students proficient in soft skills along with the core curriculum so that the students have better placement opportunities.

2. Campus interviews are organized for the student placements.

3. Various workshops and skill training programmes are conducted every year to cater to the job demands of the market.

4. Regular and formal staff-student interaction takes place in the form of Individual Conferences and Group Conferences as a part of Social Work practicum, where faculty members guide and supervise the students in fieldwork as well as mentor students in both personal and professional growth.

5. The Social Work Student Forum a platform created and managed by students themselves, organizes a series of special lectures every week wherein resource persons from different fields of Social Work are invited to the Department to interact with students, share their knowledge and experiences and expose students to the current issues and challenges.

6. Annually, orientation visits are organized to at least ten Development Agencies for the Ist and IIIrd semester students. The visits aim at developing an insight into the day to day functioning of such agencies.  

7. As part of the practice-based learning (Field Work), the students are allocated to various development agencies like industries, NGOs, Panchayath Raj institutions, hospitals, etc to carry out their fieldwork and enrich themselves with the required practical knowledge. 

8.A  ten-day Social Work camp is organized by the Department for the IInd semester MSW students either in rural or tribal areas. This camp develops qualities such as leadership, planning and organizing abilities, belongingness, group cohesiveness and so on. The students are enabled to analyze and understand the challenges and realities of rural/tribal area from close quarters.

9. The Department is also ably supported by ‘MSW SOCIALITES’ an alumni association of the DoS in Social Work, University of Mysore. They not only actively support all the academic requirements but also play a significant role in the placement of students for jobs. The MSW SOCIALITES in collaboration with the DoS in Social Work, University of Mysore organizes special programmes like conferences, seminars, webinars, personality development, celebration of World Social Work Day and so on.

10. The Department also has a Student Counseling and Placement Centre. This centre strives to look after placement-related activities such as fieldwork placement, job placement. It also extends a counseling services to needy students.

Social Work Practicum

The practicum with different learning opportunities is designed to develop and enhance professional practice skills. Learning is aided through observation, analysis of social realities, and experience of participation in designing and providing social work intervention.

The tasks are organized to help the learner acquire beginning skills, practice those already acquired, and master them from the simple to the complex. The learner is encouraged to gradually become an independent worker during the course of study.

Eligibility for MSW Programme

Candidates who have passed BSW/BA/B.Sc./B.Com./ BBM/B.C.A /BBA/LLB or equivalent degree of the University of Mysore or any other recognized University are eligible for admission to the MSW programme. Candidates are selected and admitted as per the general guidelines issued by the University of Mysore. The University conducts an entrance examination for admission to the course
