Brief History of Department

 The Department of studies in Urdu was established at Manasagangotri during the year 1959.  Earlier M.A. Urdu and Persian languages courses were being offered at Maharaja`s College, Mysore.  The University of Mysore was the first to offer full-fledged Urdu courses both at Under-graduate and Post-graduate levels in South India.  The department were earlier housed in Maharaja`s college, Mysore and later shifted to Humanities Block at Manasagangotri, Mysore and has full fledged infrastructure and facility for teaching and research.

VISITION AND MISSION: Our vision is to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Urdu language, literature and the art forms like calligraphy, painting, ghazal singing and promote Urdu Language and literature through teaching and research.  Our mission is to continually interact and exchange ideas with others and form up to date curriculum to give the best of education to the students and also to carry on research of international standard. 

MOTTO:

In order to achieve the highest levels of distinction in transmission of knowledge and to develop research capabilities the courses and the syllabus are constantly being updated taking into consideration the contemporary needs of the society. Our students after completing their course will have the opportunity to get employment in teaching profession, in the field of Journalism and Electronic Media.

 ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT: 

The department has richly contributed in the area of research concerning Deccani language and its development, especially on the life and works of writers.

A new methodology has been developed in teaching Prosody to create an instinct to write poems.

In collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian languages, Mysore and Karnataka Urdu Academy, Bangalore, the department has been conducting Seminars and Workshops on various topics.

BEST PRACTICES:

Mehfil-e-Urdu:   A student forum “Mehfil-e-Urdu” cultural and literary programmes among the students of all the disciplines in the campus.

MEEZAN: The department brings out a magazine “Meezan” which provides a 

Platform to the staff and students to publish their articles.

Teachers are regularly interacting with students and researchers

SPEICAL LECTURES: Eminent Scholars have been invited to deliver lectures on current topics.

COMPETITIONS: Debates and Elocution competition are being conducted.

MUSHAARA: Eminent poets participate in the Mushaara.
